  This paper reviews the relationship between investment appraisal techniques and strategic decision making in property development. The study is based on a survey developed by the author in the city of Porto Alegre and supported by Fapergs and Sinduscon/RS. The work leads to a scenario where property developers do not often make use of investment appraisal techniques, but adopting contingencial approaches prior to deciding on their development projects.
